Read Food Labels To Look Sexy In That Little Black Dress

June 23, 2008 by admin

This reader didn't like my recent video about the questionable methods food companies use to market their foods. Please give it and my response a quick read.

**********

I disagree with your conclusion that Kraft and other food manufacturers add the note about calories to deceive consumers.

In fact, the information about calories is a way of saying, 'don't think simply about weight loss - carbs are only part of the story'.

Information about carbs in food had been requested by many consumers who are trying to cut down their carb intake and believe that knowing how many carbs are in foods will help them make wiser choices.  You are jumping to the conclusion that rational and intelligent people will think the 1 carb per serving means they have a free pass to eat any amount they want.  That is simply not true.

So, I find your line of thinking to be deceptive to your customers, if they believe you that manufacturers are spending all their time trying to figure out how to trick consumers into eating a poor diet.

Do the food companies want to sell more product? Yes, they do.

Do they know people are always on the lookout for Low Carb items?  Yes, they do.

Remember the low fat cookie craze of the 90's.? Are you going to tell me the food companies didn't love the fact people were buying their "loaded with sugar" cookies? Did they market the heck out of the fact they just added more sugar when they took out the fat? No

Do you think a whole lot of very intelligent and rational people bought into it? They sure did.  Was it the consumers fault? No

There are all sorts of food labels that are loaded with ingredients that will make you fat fast, but because they slip in a "NoTrans-fats!" label people tend to think it's ok for them. Why?

Because all they have been hearing about in the news is how bad Trans-fat is for them.

Yes, very intelligent people are duped every day. Sorry, but it's true.  You are not to blame though.  A quick example is the FCC has regulated what food companies can put in their commercials on Saturday mornings targeted to kids because the FCC felt they were manipulating with their commercials towards kids.

Food companies are in business to get you to buy more food. That is what they are in business to do and I don't fault them for that.

But I'm promoting eating right and exercise. It's not the easiest thing. People who sell garbage like Hoodia and phony fat burners KNOW how easy it is to sell crap to people because they prey on your weaknesses.

If you want the TRUTH you'll find it here. Trust me, it's a much tougher sell, but it is what I love to do.  I dig for the truth and then present it to you.

Yours in health,

Jayson Hunter, RD, CSCS

PS - If you're ready for a weight loss program based on SCIENCE then the Dress Size Reduction Diet program is ready for you.

PPS - Oh, and I've been a Registered Dietitian for over ten years and have worked with hundreds and hundreds of very intelligent people who were overweight. And pretty much all of them had no idea how to read a food label. These are the weaknesses that food companies are very happy to take advantage.  Until now! :)
