Fructose vs High Fructose Corn Syrup: Which sabotages fat loss?

October 21, 2008 by Jayson Hunter

There is a lot of discussion going on lately about the Corn Industry Association videos regarding High Fructose Corn Syrup in moderation.

There are a lot of parts in those videos that I disagree with, but we will save that for another time.

With all this information and debate going on where do you turn for the facts?

Well, I have some fact right for you to help disseminate the truth from the lies.

1.  High fructose corn syrup contains approximately equal ratios of fructose and glucose. Table sugar also contains equal ratios of fructose and glucose. High fructose corn syrup and sugar are equally sweet and both contain four calories per gram.

2.  Fructose is a natural, simple sugar commonly found in fruits and honey. The absence of glucose makes pure fructose fundamentally different from high fructose corn syrup. This is because glucose has been shown to have a tempering effect on specific metabolic effects of fructose.

3.  There is no difference in how the body metabolizes table sugar and high fructose corn syrup. Once the combination of glucose and fructose found in high fructose corn syrup and sucrose are absorbed into the blood stream, the two types of sweetener appear to be metabolized similarly using well-characterized metabolic pathways.

So now when someone says why are you eating fruits they contain fructose and that will make you fat you can pull out these facts and inform them of the truth.

There is so much mis-information out on this right now that I hope you just tune it out.  Though if you do listen to it I don't blame you for being confused.

Now you can make the informed choice and know that HFCS is not good for you just as table sugar isn't and that fructose is perfectly fine and you should eat plenty of fruits if you want to burn off that extra fat.

I know you can do it!

Yours in health
