Health Benefits of Breakfast

April 30, 2008 by admin · 1 Comment

Research has found that people who ate breakfast every day were a third less likely to be obese compared to those who skipped the meal.

In addition, the subjects were half as likely to have blood-sugar problems, which increase the risk of developing diabetes or having high cholesterol, which is a known risk factor for heart disease.

"Breakfast may really be the most important meal of the day" Dr Mark Pereira

Researchers believe that eating first thing in the morning may help to stabilize blood sugar levels, which regulate appetite and energy.

They suggest people who eat breakfast are less likely to be hungry during the rest of the day and are, therefore, less likely to overeat.

"Our results suggest that breakfast may really be the most important meal of the day," said Dr Periera.

"It appears that breakfast may play an important role in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease."

The researchers have recently started to examine what those involved in the study ate for breakfast, to see if certain foods were more likely to help them stay healthy.

Initial results have suggested that whole-grain cereals may be of benefit.

They found that people who ate these were 15% less likely to have blood sugar problems but Dr Pereira said: "We need to do more research."

"People skip breakfast thinking they're cutting calories, but by mid-morning and lunch, that person is starved," says Milton Stokes, RD, MPH, chief dietitian for St. Barnabas Hospital in New York City. "Breakfast skippers replace calories during the day with mindless nibbling, bingeing at lunch and dinner. They set themselves up for failure."

So what is the moral of the story for today?

Eat your breakfast.  This could be whole grains, hard boiled egg, whole grain cereals, cottage cheese, yogurt. peanut butter, fruits and vegetables.

Or if you just don't have time to eat anything then I recommend http://professionalgradenutrition.com/lean.

Lean gives you all the nutrients you need in a filling healthy drink.  At 8gms of fiber and 35gms of protein per serving you won't feel hungry in 30 minutes like most meal replacement shakes since both nutrients provide great hunger control.

Flip Side of Fat Loss

April 28, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

At any given time, your body is either getting stronger or weaker.

It's either getting leaner or fatter.

There is no in between.

Even if you weigh the same as you did ten years ago, your body just isn't the same.

More fat has accumulated as your muscle has deteriorated.

And since muscle is the MOST metabolically active tissue in your body, well, that's not a good thing.

That's why I teach you in my Dress Size Reduction Diet program just how important it is to preserve your lean muscle tissue.

One of the reasons fat loss experts - myself included - recommend eating 5-6 small meals a day is because the frequent calories help maintain your lean tissue.

Yes, the very same tissue that melts fat off your body.

If you've been gaining weight slowly, but steadily…

If your weight has maintained over the years, but your clothes don't fit anymore…

…you need to take immediate action to flip your body's metabolism back around.

You need to eat those small, frequent, nutritious meals.

You need to incorporate high energy strength training into your exercise program.

The choice is simple: Weak or strong? Healthy or unhealthy? Lean or lumpy?

Oh, and the choice is YOURS.

Yours in health,

“The 'secrets' to fat loss have always been a combination of cardiovascular exercise, nutrition, and resistance exercise. For most trainers - professionally, practically and legally - a solid nutrition program has always been the missing link to their client’s success. Prograde Nutrition Sale Ends Tonight

April 24, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

Just a quick reminder.  Since I am in charge of Research and Development for Prograde Nutrition I do have some pull in the company.  So I made the decision to extend the one year anniversary sale until Midnight tonight.

That's right you have until midnight tonight to get 10% off any product in the store.  If you have not checked out the company before then I suggest you do because I stake my name and reputation with the products we sell.  I only insist we sell supplements that are backed by science.

You won't find any fluff or hype with these supplements.  Supplements have a specific purpose.  Once you know what the purpose is then you have to decide if it fits into your goals.  If it does great then you should take the supplement if it doesn't then don't buy the supplement.

It is that simple.  Don't get sucked into buying something you don't need.  If you have questions then ask me.

To get the 10% off coupon until midnight tonight go to

http://professionalgradenutrition.com and click on any of the themed tabs at the top.  Once you decide on which products you want to purchase there will be a coupon code field on the checkout page.

It is that simple.

Alarming increase in obese and overweight middle aged women

April 19, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

Women age 20-34 are the fastest growing overweight part of the population.

Comparing studies researchers found that in 40 years the BMI range of 25-30 (considered overweight) for the 20-34 population increased an alarming 31%.

Some of this may be due to the addicting like properties that obesity/overweight people have.  It appears that some people may become anxious and their brains shows increased levels of stress when they are not able to eat a high fat meal.

Then answer to this is to cut back and not cut out.

As the author of the Dress Size Reduction Diet I teach behavior modification and everything in moderation.  I don't expect someone to go from eating fast food 2 times a day to eating orange roughy and broccoli.  It takes time to change behaviors and you can eat anything you want as long as the quantity and number of times it is eaten is controlled.

You want that cake.  Go ahead and have a piece.  Just don't eat a piece of cake every day for a month.

Does that make sense?

Remember if you want to not be one of these statistics for the every growing obese market then start making changes 1 day at a time and build on your successes.  This means that you can still have your cake and eat it to.  Just not every day :)

Do you have to cheat to stay on the weight loss track?

April 18, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

For some people the answer is YES.

Sometimes you just have to indulge a little.  Satisfy those cravings so that you don't binge on something you really shouldn't binge on.

When it comes to food cheating keeps us sane.  Now I wouldn't say the same thing for other types of cheating.  I am just talking about cheating with food.

If you are one that has to cheat every now and then I have created a little cheat sheet for you to follow.

These foods are roughly 200 calories.  The alternative choices are roughly the same calories, but healthier for you.

You Crave:      Skip This                               Eat This
Chocolate         8 Hershey's Kisses                 50 chocolate raisins (protein, calcium, fiber)

Fruity               10 Starburst candies              2.5 packs Fruit snack (vitamins A, C and E)

Nutty               3 snack size Snickers              20 peanut M&M's (twice the calcium)

I included why the alternative was better for you if you had to choose.   So if you just have to indulge on something that isn't a part of your weight loss program try and choose a comparable food that will provide more nutrients and not just empty calories.

Are You Hungry Shortly After Eating?

April 17, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

If so it could be because of the types of foods you are eating.

Eating lots of water-logged foods can control hunger and shed pounds according to Pennsylvania State University researchers.

A study shows two groups that ate a reduced-fat diet, but one consumed high in water foods such as fruits, vegetables, and lean meats.

Six months later the water-rich group had lost an extra 5 pounds on average than the other group who didn't eat water-rich foods.

The water-rich group also ate 25 percent more food by weight and felt less hungry.

So it is true that you can eat more food that equal less calories yet safisfy your hunger and shed fat.

So load up on those water-rich foods and grab this free report that provides 36 potent foods that not only have disease fighting properties, but are water-rich to provide fullness yet shed fat.

What did you do for your workout today?

April 16, 2008 by admin · 1 Comment

I just had to write this before I got off this high I am on.  You see here in the Midwest we have had some strange whether this winter.

Heck, just the other day it was 32 degrees and snow flurries.  Isn't this the middle of April?

Anyways, I am looking forward to some warmer weather and getting outside.

Today was a great day.  It was sunny warmer and it energized me for a great workout.

On my drive to the gym I decided to follow one of Alwyn Cosgrove's Afterburn Workouts to get a really good workout in.

Then when I was done and driving home I didn't want to go back inside so I stopped at a park by my house, which has a hill and ran some sprints and plyometrics.

I am sure I will feel it tommorrow, but it felt great.

Did you know you can get a natural high from working out because of the endorphins that you release when working out.

It kept me in a great mood and I was proud of what I was able to do.

Now, you may wonder why I didn't run for 2 miles around the park.

The answer is I hate slow boring cardio.  I have always hated it even though I was good at the distance events in high school I hated doing them.

So I ran sprints in high school even though I wasn't very fast or competitive in that event I did it anyways because it entertained me.

Little did I know that I was doing the same workouts that the experts now preach to burn fat fast.

Little did I know that I was molding my metabolism to burn fast all day long and to keep me thin.

No wonder I could eat like a horse and never gain any fat.

The moral of the story is this:

If you want to feel great and release all those endorphins as well as burn fat to show off that lean muscular physique then high intensity interval training is the key to your success.

If you want to learn more about Alwyn's Afterburn workouts and the workout I did check it out here.

Afterburn Workouts

The research is more conclusive every day in regards to interval training and fat loss so don't delay.  Now that it should be getting warm in all parts of the country get out to your local park and run some sprints.  It doesn't matter if you are overweight and can't run much.

If all you could do is run 20ft and then walk 50ft and then run 20ft this would be interval training and better than just walking.  Start slow and take it one workout at a time.  Before you know it you will be working out hard in the gym and outside all the time looking thinner and thinner.
